The Golden Lion winner for Best Film at last year’s Venice Film Festival, writer-director Samuel Maoz revisits personal memories from 1982 with this recounting of the Israeli incursion, all of which we see from inside a tank. Similar in respects to the likes of Das Boot, this makes for a claustrophobic and intense film as we experience everything the young soldiers do first-hand, with the only contact from the outside world through the barrel sights, or radio.

Not as original or poetic as the fantastic recent Waltz with Bashir that tackled the same conflict, this is very much a war movie, and as such gives an excellent portrayal of the dirt, dark, drama and confusion.
