15 08 10: Recent Release (ish) - Mid-August Lunch

8pm Mid-August Lunch (Di Gregorio 09)

Not quite a recent release, but we’ve been waiting for a chance to play this delightful, witty life-affirming film, about an annual festival in Italy that takes place on… the 15th August. (See what we did there…? And we would have shown it at lunch-time except for the fact that the football season has started already… sigh)

From the writer of the fantastic Gomorrah about the violent, Mafia underworld of drugs and corruption, Mid-August Lunch is well, slightly different. This is a tale of an unemployed 50 year old man (Di Gregorio also starring) who looks after his elderly mother, and through various twists, ends up looking after the accountant’s mother and elderly aunt as well as his Doctor’s mother for the weekend. Rather than a farce, this becomes an understated relationship comedy, with pitch-perfect performances from all that means the movie never strays into sentimental or over-the-top eccentric territory.

A small gem of a film, with enough warmth to last you through till next Summer.
