29 03 10: Recent Release - The White Ribbon

• 8pm The White Ribbon (Haneke 2009).

The latest addition to the impressive rosta of films from Austrian director Michael Haneke (Hidden, The Piano Teacher, Code Unknown) is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Haneke explores the goings-on in a village in Germany on the eve of the war yet as with Hidden there is no traditional narrative progression or even resolution here, just an extraordinarily disturbing and mysterious film. Shot in an icy black and white, in German and with Haneke's usual lack of music it doesn't on paper sound like a barrel of laughs, but do not hesitate in watching this. It is yet again another hugely powerful and effective piece of filmmaking from one of contemporary cinema's most masterful directors. Outstanding.

12 09 10: Recent Release - A Killer Inside Me

8pm  A Killer Inside Me (Winterbottom 10)

Dark, violent noir tonight from Brit director Michael Winterbottom, starring the excellent Casey Affleck as a small-town deputy sheriff. Based on the pulp fiction book by Jim Thompson the film tells the tale of Lou Ford (Affleck) with increasing problems all around that start to spiral out of control. Attacked in some quarters for its violence towards women, this is a hard-hitting ride with a savage, bleak heart and a central performance from Affleck that raises the film to a must-see.
