10 03 10: Recent Release - An Education

• 8pm An Education (Scherfig 09)

The night before we played Fish Tank it picked up the BAFTA for best British film, so as this screening is the day after the Oscars, maybe we can do it again with Carey Mulligan picking up Best Actress to add to her BAFTA? It certainly is a cracking performance from the newcomer as a middle-class teenager growing up in the London suburbs in the early 60's who falls under the spell of suave older man Peter Sarsqaard. Adapted from journalist Lynn Barber's memoir by Nick Hornby this is a solid well-balanced British film (albeit with direction by Danish female director Lone Scherfig) with Emma Thompson and Alfred Molina excellent, although the star is undoubtedly the marvellous Mulligan. Not to be missed!
