22 02 10: Recent Release - Fish Tank

• 8pm Fish Tank (Arnold 09)

This scooped the Best Film Award at The Evening Standard Film Awards last night to follow up the Jury Prize at Cannes last year, which should help raise more the profile of a stunning film and filmmaker in Andrea Arnold, who's first feature Red Road was excellent too. But whereas Red Road took to the council tower blocks of Glasgow, Fish Tank sets down in the council estates of Essex (home too of Arnold's Oscar winning short film Wasp) and the character of 15 year old Mia, played by newcomer Kate Jarvis. Gritty social realism yes, certainly, but this flies along with cracking dialogue, characters and relationships. Unflinching, yet unprejudiced and with just the right level of charm.
Cancel important things.
