09 02 10: Recent Release - Adventureland

• 8pm Adventureland (Mottola 09)

Following the success of Superbad, director Greg Mottola brings another addition to the US indie, awkward coming-of-age romance story genre. And whilst Adventureland might not have had the success of Superbad, it is certainly as enjoyable and arguably a better film.

The story is set in the 80's and follows college student James who has to get a summer job to save for college. And ends up at the local fading and very 80's theme park Adventureland, along with a whole cast of misfits, dropouts, cool kids, bullies and two excellent managers setting the stage for a summer's worth of well, adventures. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is beautifully judged and flows along brilliantly with the perfect level of laughs, depth and melancholy.

Disappointing to see the big-budget, big-star Hollywood romantic comedies in the awards nominations again. This is certainly far better. Do not miss.
